INTERNAL APPLICANTS WILL BE GIVEN FIRST CONSIDERATION PURSUANT TO A COLLECTIVE BARGAINING AGREEMENT. Under direct supervision of Water Supply and Treatment Plant Manager, is responsible for the operation of all Water Treatment Plant facilities to ensure water is properly treated and delivered to customers via distribution system, that water is bacterially safe and aesthetically acceptable and meets all criteria of regulating agencies, that treatment plants and wellfields are operated in compliance with Federal/State and local laws; acts as liaison to public for 24-hour water/sewer service emergency response program.
WORKING HOURS: 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. (Monday - Friday; weekend rotation)
Please note the supplemental pay that is added to the base pay for the following licenses:
Ohio Class I Water Supply Certification: $0.30/hr
Ohio Class II Water Supply Certification: $0.55/hr
Ohio Class III Water Supply Certification: $0.75/hr

Performs daily checks to determine proper equipment operation (e.g. physically and/or through the System Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system); performs manual equipment adjustments; where necessary; checks, reads and records all plant data from the SCADA system; gathers samples from system for laboratory analysis (e.g., Bac-T, fluoride, chlorine); checks and reads chlorine residuals at plant systems; adjusts chlorine feed rates as needed; computes and sets feed rates for all chemical treatment processes to assure water meets or exceeds Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) standards for safe drinking water; inspects, operates and maintains rapid sand filters; back washes filter system, repairs and adds rapid sand filter media; monitors and records ground water draw-down levels on all wells and all elevated storage tanks; inspects all pumping stations and records discharge pressures; checks plumbing at pumping stations for leaks; utilizes computers for EPA reports and SCADA system; performs recordkeeping requirements, of a certified operator, per the Ohio Administrative Code (OAC) 3745-7-09, including maintaining operation and maintenance records for each public water system or water treatment facility. Maintains a professional manner when interacting with both internal and external customers. Complies with workplace health and safety standards: wears required personal protective equipment; promptly report unsafe conditions; complies with all departmental, county, state federal policies/procedures/regulations and laws.
Acts as receiving agent for deliveries of supplies and equipment; monitors inventory levels of chemicals and recommends restocking to manager.
Performs minor plumbing repair on pumps, buildings and water lines. Climbs water towers for repair, maintenance and inspection; assists in distribution of customer boil order notices as required.
Addresses emergency situations by responding to alarms and emergency call outs; carries cell phone; acts as duty operator; meets requirements for back-up Operator of Record (OR) when necessary.
Diagnoses and recommends remedial measures concerning plant operations and maintenance problems.
Assists with grounds keeping and snow removal as needed.
Performs other duties of a similar nature or level as assigned.
High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (G.E.D.); 1 yr. of operator experience; Ohio Class I Water Supply Certification; valid Ohio Driver's License.
- Or equivalent of Minimum Class Qualifications for Employment noted above may be substituted for the education and/or experience required. Education and Experience may not be substituted for mandated licensure/certification.
CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Ohio Class I Water Supply Certification.
PREFERRED CERTIFICATION: Ohio Class II or III Water Supply Certification.
EQUIPMENT USED: Including but not limited to: process and pumping equipment; System Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA); portable pumps and generators; volt and amp meters; analytical equipment (e.g., colorimeter); grounds keeping equipment; snow removal equipment; pick-up truck; small hand tools; safety equipment.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Climbing, Balancing, Stooping, Kneeling, Crouching, Crawling, Reaching, Standing, Walking, Pushing, Pulling, Lifting, Grasping, Feeling, Talking, Hearing.
VISUAL ACUITY: The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; expansive reading; visual inspection involving small defects, small parts and/or operation of machines (including inspection); using measurement devices; and/or assembly of fabrication of parts at distances close to eyes. The worker is required to have visual acuity to operate motor vehicles or heavy equipment.
WORKING CONDITIONS: The worker is subject to: both environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions, oils; the worker frequently is in close quarters (crawl space, shafts, manholes, small, enclosed rooms, small sewage and water line pipes, and other areas which could cause claustrophobia; the worker is required to function in narrow aisles or passageways.
MEDIUM WORK: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
