Job Title: Physician Assistant – Endoscopy Unit
Location: Tufts Medical Center, Boston, MA
Position Type: Full-Time
Overview
Tufts Medical Center’s Division of Gastroenterology is seeking a Physician Assistant (PA) to join the Endoscopy team. This unique role combines direct clinical responsibilities with administrative and care coordination duties to ensure high-quality patient care, smooth referral pathways, and efficient endoscopy unit operations. The PA will work closely with supervising physicians, the triage nurse, schedulers, and nursing/technical staff, while also serving as a resource for patients and referring providers.
Clinical Duties
Review upcoming procedures for indications, contraindications, and appropriateness; discuss concerns with supervising or referring physicians.
Provide routine prescriptions for colonoscopy preparation and refill GI medications as appropriate.
Inform patients of biopsy results when the endoscopist is unavailable, ensuring adherence to established timelines.
Coordinate follow-up care resulting from procedural findings, including management of new diagnoses (e.g., malignancy) in collaboration with supervising physicians.
Maintain a designated face-to-face or virtual clinic for pre-endoscopy evaluation and treatment planning under staff supervision, as directed by the GI service.
Serve as a consultant to GI nursing and technical staff regarding endoscopy-related questions or problems.
Educate patients about their planned endoscopic procedures and provide post-procedure counseling when needed.
Participate in educational activities, including teaching and trainee supervision, as appropriate.
Administrative and Programmatic Duties
Assist supervising physician and triage nurse in reviewing endoscopy orders and referrals and liaise with endoscopy schedulers to ensure timely scheduling of procedures.
Support development of a streamlined, standardized endoscopy referral process.
Participate in reviewing and triaging GI referrals (outpatient and inpatient) for disposition (clinic evaluation versus direct-to-endoscopy).
Contact referring providers to obtain medical records and discuss medication holds as needed.
Assist in developing and updating patient education materials, pre-procedure instructions, and clinical protocols.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Endoscopy.
Contribute to research activities within the division, if applicable.
