This position is open to current and previous Evergreen Fire Rescue personnel only.

About the Position

Under the general supervision of the Fire Captain, the Firefighter/EMT is charged with the responsibilities of responding to firefighting, EMS, rescue, wildland and other emergency and non-emergency incidents.

While there are routine and essential duties, no day is the same; from day-long training sessions to responding to an activated fire alarm, fighting a structure fire, responding to low and high acuity medical emergencies, an emerging wildland incident to performing life safety education or public education activity in the community are all within the expectations of EFR personnel. Firefighter/EMT position will also be assigned additional duties which may include scheduling and attending meetings, budgeting and following financial policies as well the need to attend meetings relative to the position and the agency.

Core Responsibilities Include:

  • Respond to emergency and non-emergency incidents to protect lives and property through the prevention and extinguishment of fires, as well as assisting in the preservation of evidence to determine the cause of fires.
  • Provide the necessary medical/rescue care and services required to mitigate an emergency situation pursuant to established policy, procedure, and protocols.
  • Safely drive fire apparatus, ambulances and utility vehicles and if a Driver/Engineer be able to proficiently perform related fire engineer activities.
  • Acts as a high-performing team member using closed-loop communications to reconfirm orders and is capable of questioning unsafe orders.
  • Understand and remain current with the expectations of the Incident Command System, and Incident Management systems and be able to assume command roles as necessary
  • Demonstrate strong decision-making skills and ability to remain calm under pressure.
  • Demonstrate excellent communication skills and ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Demonstrates comprehensive knowledge and adherence to EFR’s Policies and Procedures relating to Fire, EMS and Administrative expectations for FF/EMT position.
  • Perform a complete safety and functional check of essential equipment such as Personal Protective Equipment, SCBA, and assigned apparatus and related equipment/inventory to ensure operational readiness.
  • Maintain a high level of situational awareness, including weather, traffic conditions, special events, staffing issues, and priorities set forth by the company officer or chief officer staff.
  • Perform the daily, weekly, monthly and other scheduled station and apparatus maintenance and cleaning expectations as outlined.
  • Work as a productive and collaborative member of a dynamic response environment that includes the engagement of volunteers, officers and all divisions within EFR to effectively mitigate emergency and non-emergency situations in the community and in the station.
  • All stations have scheduled duties for secondary apparatus checks, cleaning, and maintenance. The Firefighter/EMT will know and comply with these duties timed with the Company Officer's direction.
  • Actively participate in drills, training sessions, and continuing education programs to maintain a high level of proficiency in knowledge, skills and abilities to assure a high level of proficiency in all aspects of fire and EMS and to maintain required certifications. Position may require training, meetings and travel in areas outside of the district either on or off duty.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements:

Education and Experience required for success:

Equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.

  • CO Certified Firefighter II (obtain within 6 months of hire)
  • CO Hazmat Awareness/Operations
  • Driver Operator/Pumper (obtain within 1 year of hire)
  • CO or National Register EMT-Basic (obtain within 90 of hire)
  • NIMS 100, 200, 700, 800
  • NWCG 130/190 /L-180 with current Red Card
  • Work Capacity Test at the Arduous Level (Pack Test)
  • Current Candidate Physical Agility Test (CPAT) certificate at the time of hire
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Colorado Driver’s License with no major violations

All certificates and requirements must remain current to accept a conditional offer of employment. This hiring period, EFR is allowing an exception for an applicant to have a valid EMT- B certification at the time of application, but must be completed and successfully passed during the EFR EMT-B class being held in the first quarter of 2026. Driver Engineer – C qualification is an expectation of the position that the applicant must be able to drive frontline apparatus (E132 units specifically) at the time of hire.

Compensation and Benefits :

Evergreen Fire Rescue offers a competitive wage and benefits package to prospective employees. The 2025 starting annual salary for the Firefighter position is $70,000. Consideration for starting at a higher step to an applicant who has full time career fire service experience on a case by case basis.

Application and Testing Process

Step 1: Apply for job

All candidates are required to submit a resume, cover letter, and required certifications.

Step 2: National Testing Network (NTN) Firefighter Test

All candidates are required to register with the National Testing Network to apply. A Public Safety Self Assessment (PSSA) and FireTeam written exam are required. The written exam must have a passing score and your score will be weighted in the calculation of final scoring matrix. Any fee for testing is the responsibility of the applicant. To access testing, visit ; select Find Jobs, navigate to Firefighter Jobs, and sign up for Evergreen Fire Rescue to apply and schedule a test. Tests are offered multiple times a week, including Saturdays. The majority of tests are offered around the Denver metro area. Upon completion of the exam, all candidate scores are forwarded to Evergreen Fire Rescue.

Step 3: Candidate Physical Agility Test (CPAT)

All candidates must possess a current CPAT certificate at the time of hire. Evergreen Fire Rescue accepts certificates from any licensed testing organization. Please note there is also a fee associated with this test. Additional information on the CPAT and how to obtain a certificate may be found at various locations around the Denver Metro area via an online search.

Step 4: Process

Candidates who meet the minimum requirements and successfully pass the written exam may be invited to participate in the interview process. This process will be determined and are subject to change but include any or all of the following-oral interview(s), presentations, and scenario-based activities. Candidates who are successful in the process will be placed on a preliminary eligibility list.

NOTE: EFR will provide additional consideration during the interview process to current and anyone who has served EFR in the past 3 years and left on good terms through any service including but not limited to Volunteer, Residents program, Part-Time, and Full-Time employees.

Preference Points

Each applicant will be awarded 0.5 points for each 6 months of employment with EFR. This will not be prorated other than in 6-month time periods. EFR will also consider additional preference to United States Veterans as allowed by state and federal statutes. Documentation will need to be submitted. Conditional Job Offer

Conditional job offers will be given to chosen candidate(s) based on agency hiring needs. Job offers are conditional upon the successful completion of a formal criminal background check, motor vehicle records review, drug screen, pre-employment physical, and psychological evaluation. Notification will be made either in person or by telephone. Successful candidates will be made a written offer and given a specific timeline to accept or reject the offer.

Post Hiring Requirements

All candidates who receive a conditional offer must have all prerequisite expectations complete or in progress as outlined in the job posting. Any person hired will be expected to be able to successfully complete an initial year of employment where there will be regular evaluation of the employee’s ability to be successful in the position they have been hired for.

Eligibility List

Those who are placed on the eligibility list will remain on the list for one year (with the option to extend up to 6 months or dissolve prior to 12 months with Chief approval) or until the list has been exhausted within the stated time frame. The list will be created based on the total points achieved by a candidate. If utilized for future hiring, the appropriate number of applicants will be contacted in order of rank. Any candidate may be removed from the final eligibility list based on any action or behavior inconsistent with EFR’s organizational mission, vision, and/or values determined by the Fire Chief and Human Resources Manager.
